I Yearn to Play Ping Pong

By Jose D. Rios (3/16/26) 4 min read

How It Started

I firsted played ping pong when my family was on vacation. The hotel we were staying at had a ping pong table. I was around 13 years old and my brothers and I would play against each other.

Where It Hit Me

Fast forward to High School. My physical education class is starting their ping pong season. The class plays different sports depending on the year and I just so happened to be going into one of the most addicting sports of all time.

We started the ping pong season by getting use to the sport. The rules of the game, how to hold the paddle, how to swing, all that jazz. It was cool at first until you get matched up against the competitive friends you have in the class. Two beginners getting a feel for the sport turns into two players demolishing the ball to get the upper hand. That sounds a bit cringe but it truly felt that intense.

I would look forward to PE to compete against my friends. I soon naturally found myself gravitating towards the pen grip. It just felt natural and more intuitive. I was unstoppable.

The school then started to allow kids to play ping pong during lunch in the gym. That is when I started to turn it up a notch. I started to play against friends that weren't in my PE class but were on a slightly better level than me. It felt good sending the ball flying, back and forth.

Where I am Now

My friends and I recently went to this billiards place but I convinced everyone to play on the small ping pong section they had aside. We stayed there for 3 hours. It felt like Marty Supreme. Bad ventilation, trying your hardest in ping pong, sweat dripping down my face. It was amazing.

The Thing.

The main reason I love it is because of the swatting. You swat the life out of the ball and the reason its fun is because you can feel yourself fine tuning your strength and aim at the same time. You want to hit it with the perfect amount of strength and channel it to a specific spot. Once both parties have that going back and forth, the feeling is priceless.

I Need More

I only played on 3 seperate occasions/times. Vacation, PE, rarely with friends. I need more. I feel like I can be really good if I was able to play more. Its a strong urge. I want to get better but its one of those sports where its not as common in the US. I wonder if ping pong is like China's basketball. I know they go hard in the paint in ping pong down there. Recently heard of this dude called Ma Long. This dude is cracked.

Other

I dont know if I gave an update on my game log but I finished Portal 2 (probably the funniest and definetly one of the greatest games I ever played in my life), played a significant amount of Satisfactory which is flipping amazing, and been getting into Deep Rock Galactic with some friends. Rock and stone dude. As for coding and learning, I have been slowing down because I am still geting accustom to my new job but its ramping up now. Im getting the groove and my schedule and head space is significantly stabilizing now so thats good.

Been slightly obsessed with youtube as of recently, need to slow down on the tubes.

Im excited for my next ping pong session, coding on my current website, and Crimson Desert that releases this Wednesday. I did not revise this blog, I should probably create a note on my blog section that states I never revise just so the audience, if there is one, knows why I may have some errors.

adios (thumbs up emoji)
